Xiaomi stopped the MIUI 12 upgrade for a number of devices in December 2020, including the Redmi Y3, Redmi 7, Redmi 6, and Redmi 6A. The firm, on the other hand, stunned everyone by issuing the Redmi 7 upgrade. The Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A are now receiving a similar makeover, but there is a catch.
Xiaomi has cancelled plans to update the above-mentioned devices to MIUI 12 due to performance concerns. Regardless, the company released the Redmi 7 upgrade. In fact, the MIUI 12.5 update was just applied to this device. As a result, there was anticipation that the remaining three smartphones would eventually receive the MIUI 12 upgrade. Finally, that day has arrived. However, the upgrade will not last indefinitely.
According to an official Xiaomi Mi Community article (via Xiaomi Firmware Updater), the MIUI 12 update will not be rolled out through OTA to Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A users (over-the-air). Because the hardware in these two cellphones is incapable of handling the new software. As a result, the update is only available in the form of a ‘Fastboot ROM.’ Users who are interested can use this method to unlock their phone’s bootloader.
Xiaomi cautions that MIUI 12 does not work well with these two phones. There are stutters, and the time it takes for an app to open is longer. As a result, proceed cautiously. It’s worth mentioning that, while MIUI 12 and MIUI 12.5 are available for Redmi 7 through OTA, they’re only available in China. The MIUI 12 Fastboot ROM for the Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A is also only available in Chinese versions.
