Vodafone Idea loses 1.8 million subscribers

Jio and Airtel’s customers have increased

After two straight months of witnessing growth in its subscriber base, Vodafone Idea (VI) showed a decline of 1.8 million users in the month of April, 2021, according sector regulator’s data. Reliance jio continued to maintain its lead with a net addition 4.8 million wireless users in the month, while rival Bharti Airtel added 0.5 million, according to data released by the TRAI on Monday

The telecommunications (telecom) sector became a victim of the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. It saw a sharp decline in subscriber addition at 2.16 million in April, according to the latest data by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).

This is one-sixth of the user addition in March, which was at 13.25 million, revealed the data by the regulator.As a result, Jio’s market share in the wireless category rose to 36.15%, while Airtel held 29.83% of the market and Vi closed the month with 23.83% of total wireless subscribers.

But Jio had the largest chunk of inactive subscribers. At 92.5 million, they accounted for 21.63% of its subscriber base. Airtel had the highest ratio of active subscribers, which constituted 98.31% of its total base, while for Vi, the percentage was 89.87%, Trai data showed.

In the fixed wireline segment, Jio was the top gainer, adding 194,800 new connections, whereas Airtel gained 59,305. With this, Jio has narrowed its gap with Airtel in the wireline category, holding 3.5 million subscribers against the latter’s 4.7 million.

“The number of telephone subscribers in India increase from 1201.20 million at the end of the march 21 to 1,203.47 million at the end of April-21, thereby showing a monthly growth rate 0.19 %.” Trai said.

In April 2021, 9.67 million subscribers submitted their requests for mobile number portability.
